Start/End Loc: Slumgullion Pass Summit (Lake City)
Distance/Elevation: 16.4 miles RT/2745 feet elevation gain
I camped in my truck at the pullout at Slumgullion Pass Summit, ~11500 feet, where I was treated to a cold, sub-30 degree night but, hey, it’s October. The crux of the day was getting started in the morning.
I was looking forward to a long mellow day and that’s what I got: a lot of easy tundra strolling. It was late in the year so no bugs and no worries from any marshy areas. Although plenty of snow up higher from the huge dump last week, there was no snow to speak of where I was. It was a good choice for what I wanted.
Other than the tundra and some road walking, from the 71 Mountain - Jarosa Mesa saddle I followed the CDT east for a ways. It was a little tricky finding Jarosa Mesa in its expansive summit area, wouldn’t want to try w/o my GPS.
I suppose you could save distance and time by driving up the 4WD road from Hwy 149 south and up through Sawmill Park to Rambouillet Park, but I don’t know what the first few miles would be like. The Rambouillet Park part of the road looks fine.
